We Need Your Help!

Thank you all for your interest in the UM SoBA marketing curriculum.  As some of you know, during the 2015-2016 academic year I will be taking a deep dive into our Principles of Marketing course, teaching 3 sections of the class in the fall and 3 sections in the spring.

To prepare for Fall semester, I am planning a significant overhaul and update of the course.  Over the last several years we have been building rigor in the marketing major and developing an outstanding suite of robust and modern marketing electives.  Principles of Marketing is not only our first formal point of contact with students majoring in marketing, but it is also a lower core course required for all students in the business school.  Furthermore, we frequently have students from other UM majors, including Journalism, Communications and Recreation Management.  As such, the course needs to balance what is best for marketing majors with what is best for an introductory level, survey course.

I'd love to get your thoughts on what should and should not be covered in this course.  What are the critical issues, skills, and theories that absolutely must be in any modern introductory marketing course?

In the comments section, please let me know what you think.  Rather than prompt you with specific questions, I want to leave it open ended to allow for unconstrained thought.  I chose this blog platform to avoid crowding inboxes and to allow for dialogue.

Anything goes.  I am not tied to any particular textbook or formal structure, other than the fact that the course is 15 weeks long and meets 2x/week for 80 minutes. I would like have students engage in as many hands-on projects as possible and in the past have used live problems facing local businesses.

Thanks....and Go Griz!
